A comic device note: Tavis's exercise machine is a fourth-generation StairMaster rigged like a down-escalator at punishing speed, forcing him to "run climbing for his life" (p. 1036) — hence the crash-mat on the office wall behind it. He upgraded to it after a scary cholesterol report and at first struggled, once needing a back-brace.
