A telling quirk: tennis etiquette is to yell for help and shoot back a neighbor's errant ball, but Hal and Axford are "constitutionally incapable" (p. 1035) of asking, instead hoarding their own balls and trudging court to court to fetch them — an inability no amount of coaching from Watson or deLint can fix.
